    (an old grave), Ballinvoash ( place of death ) We have other place names such as Sarnaught (bare ridge), Baile na nÉan (Home of the birds), Turlough (dry lake) Béal Easa ( the mouth of the waterfall) There is not a place name in Ireland which has not its own meaning.
    Many eminent men such as Dr Joyce of Limerick and Geoffrey Keating in the fifteenth century entered in their diary various explanations which they received from people through the country concerning certain place names. Then a book was issued which contained all these facts in brief. A work like this is invaluable to a country as it puts before the minds of the people scenes from past history, and helps
