  2. Monday is market day in the Square of this West Country town. The clear Summer air is alive with sound: the bleat of sheep on their way from the cattle fair, the clop-clop if a local land-owner going by on his mare. Among the medley of farmers cards, blue-pained elevators, red-wheeled barrows, and the tables of job-lot salesmen is the hum of talk from small groups and big.
