  1. The Old Man 28/9/'37
    An old man called at our house yesterday. He was neatly dressed but his shiny sleeves and battered shoes told their own tale. He carried an old battered suitcase. He spoke quietly: "Does the lady of the house need any thread or laces"? My mother was busy and she did not need thread or laces. When I told him so he closed up his suitcase and he thanked me ever so quietly. I watched him move slowly down the garden path.
    Most pedlars talk loudly and force you into buying. This old man was different. He might have a house and
