  1. Long ago there were no National schools in Ireland but the teacher used to teach the children under a hedge or in the corner of a barn.
    They had no black-boards or chalk they had only slates and slate-pencils. They had no seats but the children used to sit around the teachers on sods of turf or on stones.
    During the time of these schools the children were very anxious for learning and they used to travel miles to school
