- Hedge Schools. 7-3-'38
In olden times there were not as many schools in Ireland as there (is) now. And the people had to walk miles before they could get a Teacher. The Teachers and children used to hide under a hedge or in a cave or in some hiding place where it would not be found out. They had very few books, they had no copies, or pens but they used to leave a slate on their knees and write with a slate pencil. They had no desks or tables they had to sit on stones or sods of turf. They learned reading, writing, and arithmetic.
