- In olden times there were no Chemist Shops and no doctors and no trained Nurses but the people used to cure their ailments with herbs. Mumps were cured with a plant called Gladom which grows in our garden in Derreen County Galway. For a deep cut people get a rib grass and smear it with butter and put it on the wound. Boils were cured by bathing with salt and buttermilk.
