- In olden times schools were forbidden and children were obliged to go secret schools known as Hedge-shools.
There was a hedge school held near our village in Tom Gately's barn in the Bog-road, and a large crowd of children used to gather there every morning and wait for their teacher who was known by the name of Johnny Villy, and used to walk to and from his home every day which was in Ahascragh a distance of five miles from Bog-Road.
