frighten birds from the gardens. This is the way it was done, you got a lath a foot and half long, next you got another lath a foot long and both of them are joined together at one end with a piece of rope, and there was a hand grip made in the end of the long one. The short one then hung loose and with a short sweep of your hand to and fro it made a sound that frightened the birds.
They used make a whistler from the sycamore or ash tree. First you cut a straight smooth. Then you cut the size of the whistler and hammer it to loosen the bark. Next you turn off the bark when it is loose, and cut the inside wood to the shape of your whistler and it is then fitted into the bark and the whistler is finished.
