  1. There is an old fort in Gurtcrissane and it is in the middle of a field. There is a mound of earth round the fort and on the mound there are several whitethorn trees growing. It is said that the Danes used them as places of defence and they planted whitethorn trees and sometimes furze bushes round the fort to make shelter. The trees were growing very high and they were closed on the top. There was a small house underground and if the Danes were attacked the women and children would go down through a small opening and let the men above fighting. There are lights seen there very often in the nighttime. They say it is unlucky to interfere with a fort. All the earth has fallen in now because the fort is a very old one.
