  1. Many tinkers visit our district, they usually come in families. The principal tribes of them are, the O Briens, the Cartys and the Donoghoes. When they come around here they usually stay at the end of the foothpath at Greenville or at Coolnaleen cross.
    They come around a few days before the big fairs, the races, Easter and at Christmas. They depend on the flour, meal, potatoes and milk that they get at different houses to support themselves. They make flowers of coloured paper which they sell, they also sell holy pictures, combs, brooches and candlesticks.
    They buy tin and make saucepans and gallons out of it. They make their own caravans which they live in.
