  1. Long ago children used be up to twelve or fourteen years before they used to wear shoes. I knew one person who never wore shoes or boots in her life. Some children go without shoes in summer and more children go without shoes all the year round. There is no shoe-maker in this district not nearer than Lixnaw or Listowel. In some families they have the turn for the trade. The clogs were made in foreign countries but were worn locally long ago. They are worn yet but are very rare. There was an old saying that it was the life of an old shoe to polish it.
