  1. Once upon a time there was a very poor little girl who lived with her mother and father in a house in the side of a hill. The house in which they lived was an old cabin. It was all holes and the snakes used come into it. They were very poor and they had nothing to support them. One day the little girl had to go out to gather money to support her parents. It was Christmas Day and as she passed along through the streets she saw people inside windows eating their fine Christmas dinner and she had not a thing to eat.
    She did not get as much as a penny in a house. They did not pretend to see her. She did not know what to do or how could she go home to her father without earning a penny. Then she began to light matches
