  1. The children long ago used make chairs of rushes, and this was the way it was done. First there was a single rush put round the fingers and brought into the palm of the hand. Then there was a rush put across the palm of the hand and the first one doubled on it, and all the rest put on the same way until the chair was made.
    They used also make hats of rushes called caubeen. This is the way it was done. First you got five rushes to make the band or rim. Then you got long rushes and wove them round the band holding one with the other until you came to the end. Then they were all tied together on the top, to finish the hat.
