    split goose quills. The teacher's name was John Cronin, a native of this parish. There were no school fees but the teacher used to billet in the homes of the pupils in turn and he used to get presents of home made frieze, flannel, and stockings. After teaching in this manner for four or five years he removed to Meenanane four miles away where he got the use of a house. Some of the pupils followed him there to continue their studies.
