- In former times the local Hero of this district was Seán Byrnes. He lived in Coolanelig in the parish of Duagh. He was noted for his great strength. He was known to raise weights over a ton. A story is told that a local Magistrate in Abbeyfeale by the name of Willie Creagh in order to have a joke at the police there, some of whom were strong men, got Seán Byrnes to pretend to be drunk. This he did and the Magistrate ordered the police to arrest him. A number them came to do so but failed to arrest him. At another time he was on the run(continues on next page)
