    moonlight night and they began to work just at midnight. They were equipped with a shovel and a spade and a pick-axe. There was a white-thorn tree near the flat stone. Juat as they began to use the pick-axe the ground shook beneath them. They heard a terrible sound and a fierce wind arose. In the middle of it all a large black dog appeared. His eyes were like saucers and froth dropped from his open jaws. The men were barely able to run away and the gold did not trouble them again.

  2. One evening a man was walking through a field. He had to cross a stream. Before he came to the stream a pig suddenly appeared alongside him. The pig hunted him until he came to the corner of the field. The man, in terror, tried to hunt him away but the pig would not move for him. The animal was just about to spring on him when the man called on his dead father to come and protect him. A man dressed in white clothes immediately stood between
