  1. The slave lay beside the rice he was to gather. The weather was very hot and he wore very little clothes. His dishevelled hair was buried deep in the sand, and in his sleep he dreamt he saw his native land.
    Among the many things he saw he imagined he saw the lordly Niger flowing to the sea. Beneath the palm trees which covered the plains he once more thought he was walking. He heard the tinkling of the caravan bells which descended the mountain road.
