   Next day the mother had men working for her and she had no butter for their dinner and she sent Jack into town for it. Jack went and bought the butter and when he got it he put it inside the breast of his coat. When he reached home his mother said to him. “Jack where is the butter?” “Oh, mother” says he “I didn’t know how to carry the needle yesterday and you called me a fool, but I’m not a fool now.” “I put it just where you told me inside the breast of my coat,” and he opened his coat and showed where the butter had melted and ran all over his clothes. His mother got into a wild rage and beat Jack. “Oh Mother” says he, “how should I have carried it” “You should have put it on a dock leaf” says his mother. “All right” says Jack. You will never find me such a fool again.

   
   Next morning his mother wanted milk for her breickfast and she sent Jack into town for some. When Jack got the milk he put it in a dock leaf and started for home. Jack had not gone far when he had not two teaspoonfuls of milk on the dock leaf and when he reached home there was but a track of milk on it. “Where is the milk I sent you for” says his mother. “Oh mother” says he. I did as you told me yesterday.” “ I put it on a dock leaf and it all ran away on me.” His mother flew into a wild rage and threshed him soundly. “Did you not know you should have carried it in a can” says she.
