    I rise at dawn and after a long walk in search of my appetite I begin my work in the study. After a hour I got to breakfast and after that I return to my study. Some days a do very little work but if I am feeling in the mood I work late into the night. At intervals I go for long rides and these seem infinitely preferable to work and I return refreshed to make a further effort.
    For many reasons I dislike my work. For example: my work gives me no satisfaction, and somehow or other my books are not selling well. It pays me badly and also it is difficult to attain fame because I hear no words in praise of my work.
