    moulds of the shape of a candle. The wick used was a woven cotton thread held at the larger end of the mould by a piece of timber or a nail and drawn through the centre of it to the smaller end where it was knotted. The mould was then fixed in a soft sod of turf where a hole was made in which fitted the small end of the mould. This was then placed in an upright position. The liquid tallow was then poured into it until it was filled. It was then left for a couple of days until it became firm. Then it could be drawn out and used as a candle.
