  1. (1) Long ago there lived in Gleann Scortheen an old woman named Gráinne. At times she appeared in the shape of a pig and at times in shape of a woman. At night her eyes were like great balls of light. She was greatly feared by passers-by, because she used to attack them. A priest was notified and on a Sunday he came and read prayers of the Mass over the woman. Scarcely had he the prayers finished when Gráinne fled to the sea. Next day the priest's face was black and after a few days he died. Grainne still appears once every year and on that day some person dies in the district.
