“About fifty years ago there was a vacant house in this district near Collin, Carndonagh, which was for sale.”
(ar lean ón leathanach roimhe)heard noises in the attic, they did not take much notice of this as they thought it was caused by rats. This noise continued for some time until one day the people went up to the attic to see what it was, but there was nothing there, save a beautiful mirror.They took the mirror down-stairs and put it in the maid's bedroom. That night a wman's footsteps was heard coming downstairs. The maid was awakened, but she lay still, then the door opened of itself, although it was locked, and a beautiful girl went into the room, and stood before the mirror and said something to it.The next night the maidin came again, and did the same thing, but as she was going out of the room she turned into an old witch, and went over to the maid's bed and said "If that mirror does not be returned to the attic, there shall not be a person living in this house to-morrow night". The people removed the mirror next day, and peace again reigned in the house. It was thought that the old witch got her magic power from the mirror, and that was why she guarded it.
