    Bread.
Long ago potato - cakes were used. The potatoes were boiled, crisped and peeled. Flour was mixed with the potatoes, the potatoes were broken up finely and the mixture was wetted with butter milk. Then the mixture was made into the shape of a cake; cut into four squares and put into a pan or oven and baked for about half-an-hour.
During the season of Lent long ago bread made on water was eaten.
