1. Old Houses

   There are lots of old houses in the country Nowadays most of the houses are slated, but in olden times they were thatched. They used to be thatched with straw and scallops, and they used to sew the thatch with a kind of young scally.
   Some people would rather have thatched houses than slated ones. Some of the thatch was got along the bank of the river There, a lot of switch grass grows, and the people used to cut it and draw it home. They used to straighten it out, and thatch the houses with it.
   They old people used to have a bed beside the fire like a stretcher. The fireplace was usually at the gable wall, and very seldom at the side wall. There used only be a hole in the roof for the smoke to go out.
   They used to have long narrow windows The floors were made of flags, and they used to make putty out of yellow clay, and they would fill in the holes with this.
