them to prevent the blight with a mixture of blue stone and washing soda. They do this with a spraying machine.
In Autumn the potatoes are ploughed out with a machine which is called a digger. This turns out the potatoes from the drills, they are picked into a basket which is made specially for holding the potatoes. This basket is made from sally sticks all woven together, and having two handles. My father and the workmen pick the potatoes from the earth, into the basket. When the basket is full of potatoes they are thrown into a cart, this is emptied into a pit.
The pit is made with a shovel, by digging down in the ground four or five inches and in size according to the amount of potatoes it is to contain. The bad potatoes are put in another pit. The pits when full are covered with clay, and rushes are placed on top.
The potatoes most commonly grown in this locality are "British Queens" "Epicures" and "Sherry Champions", "Sherry Champions" grow better on our farm than any other kind.
