- Firing of Olden Times FuelFor firing long ago the old people used turf and timber. The turf was got in the bogs, and it was made by the people's hands. It was called Hand - Turf. They would make a hole in the bog and dig up the turf and break it with a Mud - Breaker, the Mud - Breaker was like a spade.
When it was broken up, they would let water on it, and mix it up together. The more you mixed, the better turf you will have when it is made. It is thrown up with a Shovel on the spread. It is put in a barrow and rolled out to a level place. It is spread out there, and formed into a sod with the hands. Each sod was made ten inches long. It is better turf than what is cut with a slane.
When it was dry it was footed.
