  1. On New Years morning the man of the house allowed none of his household to go outside until he went out first himself. Then he returned into the house carrying a lump of coal or sod of turf in his hand, and he wished each of his household a happy new year.
    Bonfires are lighted on the tops of hills on the eve of Saint John.
    Between the ninth and eleventh of Novembers a fowl is killed in many an Irish home and the blood is sprinkled on the doors.
