John Murphy of '98 was more than middle-aged in that year.

    (ar lean ón leathanach roimhe)
    83
He lived to be a great age. When he died he was buried by his own wish under the spot where he had knelt down when he had refused to burn the chapel.
[ This grave is quite well-known but is as yet unmarked by any cross or headstone.]
The Murphys have lived in Boolavogue parish ever since '98. The house they are in now is about a quarter of a mile from the house where John Murphy of the '98 period lived.
(This John Murphy is referred to under No 26).
Hawkins, the leader of the Yeos who burned the chapel, saved Roche's house & Ryan's house, but all the other houses in the locality were burned.
The present John Murphy lives in the house which Ryans lived in, in '98.
    Father John Murphy
He was fair-sized, stout but not tall. He was a good horseman. He was a young priest in '98.
When Father Murphy was burned at Tullow the Yeos could not burn one of his arms. This arm was brought to Ferns old grave-yard where it was buried.
