These parts are laid in furrows about one foot apart. Manure is spread over them and the drills are closed in with a plough. The local people help one another in cutting the potatoes and laying them in the drills.The drills, when the stalks appear over ground are grubbled and earthed and later on when they are larger, are sprayed to prevent the blight. They are sprayed with a mixture of blue stone and washing soda from a spraying machine. In Autumn the potatoes are ploughed out with a machine which is called a digger. This turns out the potatoes from the drills. The are picked into a basket which is made specially for holding the potatoes; this basket is made with sally sticks all woven together and having two handles. My father picks the potatoes into this basket.The potatoes are stored in a pit - this pit is shaped oblong. When the potatoes are picked the good ones are thrown into the pit and the bad potatoes are put into a second pit. The pit is made with a spade by digging(leanann ar an chéad leathanach eile)
