The local people help one another in sowing the potatoes. They cut them and they share the manure. They often lend one another a horse or a work - man.
When the stalks appear above the clay they are hoed, and after a short time they are grubbed and earthed up with a plough. When they are more grown they are sprayed with blue stone and washing soda to prevent the blight. They are ploughed out in October, and are picked into baskets which are made with sally sticks.
My father and mother and the neighbours pick the potatoes from the ground. When the drill is split by the plough, the pickers walk along picking the potatoes and they scatter the clay to find the hidden ones.
The potatoes are stored in pits. The pits are made large enough to contain all the potatoes. These pits are made a foot deep, the clay is placed all round them, to present the potatoes from rolling out. When all are pitted, the clay is used to cover them in, and hay is placed on top.
