  1. Long ago a giant lived in this district. One day as he was standing on top of Turn Hill he looked southward towards Newcastle West town. He saw the church and he said to himself that he would try to knock it. So saying he caught hold of a very large rock.
Lifting it high over his head in one hand he threw it with all his strength towards the church. He did not hit the church but it landed outside the wall of the Demesne. The stone can be seen there yet and the print of his five fingers are in it.
Long ago Mr. Curling who was agent to the Landlord sent his men to brake (break) it, but as the pieces were flying at them and cutting their hands and faces, they left it and away home they went. It is said that when the giant was lifting the stone, the weight of it sunk him down through the ground about four feet.
