- Shops were common in this district in olden times. Sometimes the people used to go to the nearest town to make purchases. Buying and selling was carried on after mass, but it is not practised now in this district. The principal articles sold in this way were, Tea and sugar, Flour and meal, Clothes and Boots.
Goods were bartered in this district in olden times, and there were men going around from place to place selling tea. They used to travel in horses and carts. Labour was given in exchange for goods. Sometimes a man would spend a day working in the bog in exchange for goods.
"Boot" was a word that was used in connection with buying and selling. If one man was giving an article to another man in exchange for another article, and that one article was better than the other, the man that would give the better article should get money with the article from the other man. This is called "boot".
Some people say it is unlucky to give out any money on Monday, because you would have to be giving it out for the week. The markets are always held in this district in the nearest town.
