    Long ago an old man and woman lived named Máire and Seán.

    Long ago an old man and woman lived named Máire and Seán. The man worked hard every day but Máire was no good. Seán gathered up a pound and bought a pig and killed her, and told Máire to cut it up, and that they would have a bit with every head of cabbage. So Máire began cutting it out, and placed a piece on every head of cabbage, so the dogs smelled the fresh meat, and came and eat it. They had it all eaten when Máire saw them, and she followed one dog, and got a piece of meat. So Máire put a head of cabbage and the meat down boiling. When they were
