  1. Thread and cloth were dyed at home and various devices were availed of for dyeing.
    (1) The bark of the Elder tree was boiled and the juice used for dyeing flax thread. (red)
    (2)
    Ferns were burnt and the ashes used for dyeing woollen thread. This produced a brown shade.

    Logwood was burnt +added to a certain quantity of water to produce a navy blue shade.

    Coppice was added to the logwood to produce a good black.
