- Captain Fitzmaurice of Kilcara had a large garden of turnips, growing on his farm at Kilcara.
He got up one morning to find his garden empty. Every turnip in it had been taken over night by the starving peasantry. It was said that some people travelled several miles that night for the sake of getting a few turnips as food for their families. Money was no use as no food could be got to buy.- Informant
