- In olden times people existed on two meals a day and each meal consisted of potatoes and sour milk.
The farming community and their helpers set to work at 5.30 a.m. and never later than 6. They worked for two hours and then returned home to breakfast: - a meal of potatoes, and in later years it consisted of yellow meal bread called "palk" and a saucepan of sour milk.
Work was then continued until late evening, and when all work was over the family sat down to a second meal of potatoes and milk.
