  1. Up to recent years all marriages in this district took place during Shrove, and on Shrove Tuesday there were often ten or twelve marriages.
    Unlucky Days
The month of May was regarded as un-lucky and Monday, Wednesday and Friday were regarded as unlucky days. The following rhyme was well known amongst the country folk.
    "Monday for health,
    Tuesday for wealth,
    Wednesday no luck at all.
    Thursday for losses
    Friday for crosses
Saturday the best day of all".
