When quite dry it was "pounded" with an instrument called "a bittle" until it became pliable.
The next process the flax had to undergo was "cloving". This was performed by means of a wooden instrument called "a cloving tongs". This cloving tongs was similar to the handle of a spade, one end of which was grooved, and in this groove was a wooden tongue.
The flax was drawn through the groove, and this process had the effect of cleaning it.
The 'pounding' and cloving was hard work and was usually done by women.
