- We never had a churn at home. These are the different parts of the churn, the staff and the cover. Butter was made once a week winter and summer and carried to the market on Thursday. It was the woman of the house that did the churning. The churning lasted for about an hour and a half. The churn was worked by hand. The churndash was moved up and down by the person's hand. When the staff was getting hard to move the butter was nearly made. In the summer time cold water was poured in to keep the butter cold. And in the winter hot water was put in to make it hot.
