- In my district potatoes are set in drills and in ridges. The people that have long gardens set them in drills because it is quicker to set them with a plough than to set them with the spade. The way to make a ridge is to turn a strip of scraws and turn them down on the land. When that is finished go about two feet to the other side and turn another strip. Before setting the potatoes they spread manure on the ridge, then they spread the potatoes. They put one potato at the side, one in the middle and one on the out side.
