- There is only one forge in this district now. Long ago three blacksmiths had forges in Termonfeckin. The names of the smiths who worked in the District were Mickey Byrne, John Byrne, Pat Byrne, and Pat Mooney. Pat Mooney and John Byrne had a forge and they worked together. There were many blacksmiths in the Byrne and Mooney families.
I am now going to describe Pat Byrne's forge.
It was a large shed with a thatched roof, and a square shaped door. There was one fireplace. The implements the smiths used were the bellows, hammer, the sledge, the anvil, pincers, drills and a vice.
The smiths shod horses and asses. They made ploughs, harrows, spades, and "shoes" for wheels.
