    to find out the mystery he gave a sudden turn at the top of the stairs. The girdle of his dressing gown struck the stairs sharply and then he discovered the cause of the sound, which was made by the tassel at the end of the girdle hopping of each step as he descended, and hitting the side of each step as he ascended the stairs. If he had not discovered this he would have sworn that a Ghost had followed him that night.
