  1. About 100 years ago hedge schools existed in my district. In Crevagh Mor, where a cotage now stands there was a hudge school. Lessons were taught in a hut. A school-master from Tuam, Ballymahon, taught in it. His name was Billy Walsh. He lodged at night in T. Farmer's houses. The pupils brought sods of turf under their arms every day and a penny or twopence every week. Irish was taught, but not as much as Latin and other languages. The teacher had the only books in the school. Writing was learned by slate. The teacher didn't remain long in each place. Billy Walsh is dead long ago but his daughters are still alive.
