   Éile Righdearg, the eight in descent from Cianh (son of Olioll Olum) gave the name Eile to the country. But the surname Cearbhall (signifying a champion or slaughter) was not assumed by the ruling princes until some short period previous to 1014. An O'Carroll is mentioned as slain in the battle of Clontarf - the same being in Eile chief.

   This powerful and warlike family gave lords or sub-kings of the third-order who ruled Eile Uí Chearbhaill without break down through the centuries until the Cromwellian Settlement of 1652. At this period, John O'Carroll who is the last prince of the line (and 130th in the pedigree) was transplanted to Galway by Cromwell; from him were descended the O'Carrolls of Gort, Co Galway.

   The most powerful chiefs who ruled under the O'Carrolls were O'Kennedys of Muskerry Tíre (the two Ormonds).

   The ancestor from whom the O'Kennedys are descended was Dunchuan, brother to Brian Borumha. Dunchuan's son was Cineadh, his son was Aodh, his son was Dunchuan whose son was predecessor of the O'Kennedys of Ormond.
