Councillor Maunsell was landlord of Slevoyre estate, Borrisokane, and he also possessed land at Kiltormer, Ballinasloe. He is remembered as being a good landlord and kind to his tenantry: he was a strong supporter of the downtrodden Catholics.
His catholic tenantry often repaid the acts of kindness shown them.
One year the harvest season had come very wet and so the corn crop remained stacked in the fields. A fine Sunday at last came and the parish priest appealed to his people to come that day and draw in the large harvest belonging to the Councillor. The people came giving generous help to their landlord, who happened to be away from home for the day. On this occasion the workers intermingled labour with merriment. The heart of the Gael is ever filled with music.
This remarkable Sunday was filled with labour and music. As the drove of cars came from the cornfields there was music and joy in the air. On the first load of corn sat a fiddler playing rousing Irish airs, and on the last load a piper sending forth his plaintive music.
