    The houses which existed in this district in olden times were thatched ones. The thatch was procured from the farmer. In the kitchen was an old bed known as a settle. It lay beside the fire-place, which was at the gable end of the house. The front of the chimney was usualy made of clay and wattles. \\very often in these old houses holes served as windows and a board was
