  1. There are four ruined castles in this localaty. Grennan Castle, Grace's Castle, Mullin's Castle and Dysart Castle.
    Thomas Fitz Anthony built Grennan Castle on the banks of the Nore about a quarter of a mile from Thomastown, in the twelfth century. He built Mullin's Castle in the same year. Both of these castles were attacked by Cromwell who reduced the to ruins in sixteen hundred and fifty. There was a dark dungeon in Grennan Castle where prisoners were kept and often left to die.
