  2. There was a hedge-schoolmaster in the top of Gurtnacranna in the parish of Upperchurch Co. Tipperary. Mr Wall was the name of the hedge-schoolmaster he was a stranger. He used to give them instructions. The children used to give him a little money. It was with a slate and a slate pencil they used to write with. It was English the schoolmaster used to teach them. They used to come to a certain field every morning. The first schoomaster in the old school in Ileigh was Mr O' Neill. There was a loft over the school and he used to sleep there

  3. Long ago there (was) were hedge schoolmasters in all districts. But this man that told me only knew about one man. He used in teach in Finnaha[?] parish of Upperchurch. His name was Mr Wall, he was a great teacher all the children used to be under a hedge There were schools carried on in farmers houses. It was in the same parish and district. It is not known in what house. There was no Irish in their time,
