- Shops were not so common in former years, so that people had to go to other towns to purchase goods. People used to be buying and selling after mass long ago also. When people were swapping goods, animals, or any other articles, they used to give money back. This is called "boot". They used also exchange goods, for other goods, and this is called "barter". The old people used to have a sale too called a "cant". There was no licensed auctioneer at a cant Instead there was any ordinary neighbour. Less money was given to this man than to the auctioneer. People used to keep small shops at cross-roads, in the country. These were called hucksters' shops. There used to be people walking around selling things too in olden times, and there were called "pedlars". Other people used to give thread, and other articles in exchange for rags and feathers, but it is gone out of use now as people have spring, and curled hair mattresses. There are many coins gone out of use since long ago, such as, 5s. pieces, 4s pieces, 4d. bits, 10d. bits, and 21s,(leanann ar an chéad leathanach eile)
