- Candlemaking was a great home industry in this country in olden times. Some people made candles from the tallow of goats and others made them from the tallow of cows. When the tallow was taken out of the animal it would be put into a pot and melted into liquid with the heat of the fire. Then it was poured into a mould and left there to set. Some of those moulds were made from iron and others from lead, they are pointed at one end like a candle. There was a wick made from cotton thread and it was drawn through the top of the mould and tied to a nail at the other end to keep it in the centre of the candle. When the candle was hard set in the mould the mould was dipped in warm water and then the candle could be drawn out and was ready for use. These candles were called home-made candles.
